Riverstone Networks Introduces EDGE Solution 2010 Solution Permits
Service Providers to Deliver More Affordable Metro Ethernet
Services SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In
a move to lower the barrier of entry for small and emerging service
providers into Ethernet services, Riverstone Networks (Pink Sheets:
RSTN) today unveiled a low-cost, 24-port, carrier Ethernet access
router, the Edge Solution (ES) 2010. The ES 2010 is fully
compatible with Riverstone's MPLS-based RS and 15000 carrier
Ethernet product lines, providing carriers with the ability to
deploy end-to-end, pre-integrated and manageable Ethernet networks
at more affordable price-points. In many cases, carriers are
deploying Metro Ethernet services with enterprise-designed Ethernet
switches at the access edge, where greater port densities and MPLS
are often not required. While the upfront size, cost and
functionality of these switches meet carriers' basic requirements,
the service levels they enable are limited. Moreover, the costs
associated with configuring and integrating them into a carrier
network are high, since they were not designed to work with
existing network management systems, making tasks like
troubleshooting difficult. "Smaller carriers shouldn't have to pay
for features they don't want nor should they be burdened with the
operational complexity of a piecemeal network, " said David
Ginsburg, Vice President, Marketing and Product Management,
Riverstone Networks. "The ES 2010 provides a pragmatic solution,
giving them the form and function they need, SLA flexibility, a
price they can afford, and a network they can more easily operate
and manage." The ES 2010 was specifically designed with carrier
needs in mind. It supports the functionality expected from Metro
Ethernet carrier services, including meeting pre-defined SLAs and
more flexible network troubleshooting. The ES 2010 supports both
Ethernet and IP, allowing service providers to cost-effectively
deploy Voice over IP (VoIP) and data services, including Virtual
Local Area Networks (VLANs), to small and medium-sized businesses.
The new Ethernet router is equipped with two one-gigabit uplinks,
either Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) or copper, allowing
service providers to avoid the excess cost of running any
unnecessary fiber over short distances. These features combine to
lower overall Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) in carrier Metro
Ethernet services networks. Riverstone Networks, Inc. is a leading
provider of carrier Ethernet infrastructure solutions for business
and residential communications services. Riverstone's Ethernet
router portfolio uniquely delivers the reliability that allows
carriers to meet the triple play -- voice, video and data --
service requirements of their customers in a cost-effective and
scalable way. Riverstone allows carriers to offer new services over
existing revenue-generating networks permitting them to evolve to a
next generation Ethernet infrastructure. Riverstone Contact: Amy
