April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- A financial education partnership between
SER-Jobs for Progress National, Inc. (SER National), a nonpartisan,
nonprofit organization, and Chrysler Financial, a business unit of
DaimlerChrysler Financial Services Americas) aims to make the
financial dreams of Latino families around the country a reality.
Beginning April 23 of this year, "SER Progreso" will kick-off with
the launch of a "Financial Literacy E-Center" hosted by SER
National. The web site will be friendly to users of all ages and
feature content, developed by Chrysler Financial, in both English
and Spanish. Later in the month, the first of 10 informational
luncheons and five job fairs will be staged with later events to be
hosted at sites around the country. The luncheons and job fairs
will include workshops allowing participants the opportunity to
learn the basics of using both Internet and computer technology,
including SER's E-Center, as tools for managing personal finances
and gaining new financial literacy knowledge. Representatives from
Chrysler Financial will also be on-site during the events to
provide professional knowledge and an overview of the kinds of
financial services their organization offers. "As a company,
Chrysler Financial is well aware of the financial disparities
within the Hispanic community, but we also know Latinos have a
drive to obtain new knowledge that will help them do more for their
families and create opportunities for future generations," said
William F. Jones Jr., Vice President - Chrysler Financial. "Our
goal is to provide a program that is valuable to the Hispanic
community and a haven of resources that can truly impact lives.
'SER Progreso' has that potential." According to the FDIC, half of
the 40 million Latinos in the United States are unbanked.
Furthermore, in a 2004 study involving 2 million people, the Texas
Department of Insurance said Hispanics had credit scores 5 percent
to 25 percent worse than whites. To combat credit and
finance-related issues Chrysler Financial and SER National are
teaming up to present a financial literacy program that pairs
technology, job fairs and informational "luncheons" with a
dual-language approach calculated to ensure the world of personal
finance is explained in a language every member of the family can
understand. According to Daniel Gomez, Chief Policy Analyst for SER
National - Washington, D.C., "SER is in a landmark position to
leverage an innovative financial literacy curriculum provided by
Chrysler Financial to bridge gaps in the Hispanic community that
disconnect many Latinos from sound financial management and
technology use for a better quality of life. Our hats go off to
Chrysler Financial for helping SER National to ensure language and
unfamiliarity with technology are no longer barriers to financial
success." For information about SER National, its affiliates or
