   HARTFORD GROUP PLC ("HARTFORD") LEVEL OF ACCEPTANCE OF THE
   RECOMMENDED SHARE OFFER (THE "OFFER") FOR THE ENTIRE ISSUED
        ORDINARY SHARE CAPITAL OF MONTANA PLC ("MONTANA")

By 3.00 pm London time on 1 October 1999, Hartford had received
valid acceptances from the holders of 4,109,107 Montana Shares
(representing approximately 91.24 per cent. of the issued share
capital of Montana, following the exercise of all exercisable
options).

The  Board  of  Hartford  announces that, having  obtained  valid
acceptances  for  over ninety per cent. of the share  capital  of
Montana,  Hartford will acquire compulsorily all of  the  Montana
Shares  for  which it has not yet received valid  acceptances  in
respect of the Offer.

In accordance with sections 428 to 430F of the Companies Act 1985
(the "Act") Hartford will be shortly serving notices pursuant  to
section  429(4) of the Act on the holders of Montana  Shares  for
which it has not yet received acceptances of the Offer.

The  Offer will remain open for acceptance until further  notice.
Terms defined in the original offer document dated 10 August 1999
have  the  same meaning in this press release unless the  context
otherwise requires.
