Following suspension of the shares in Hartford Group plc ("Hartford")
yesterday and following Hartford's announcement on 12 July 1999, Hartford
confirms that it continues to be in discussions with Montana plc, which may or
may not lead to a merger of the two companies.  A further announcement will be
made as soon as it is practicable to do so.
