Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi plans to visit Uganda early next year in a bid to push through the proposed takeover of Heritage Oil PLC (HOIL.LN) interests in the country by Italy's Eni Spa (E), Uganda's state media reported Sunday.

The Sunday edition of the state-run daily New Vision reported that the attack on Berlusconi last week could, however, delay the visit. The paper quoted unnamed government sources as saying that a Ugandan cabinet minister, Hope Mwesigye, visited Eni headquarters last month during her visit to Italy.

The Ugandan government is seen backing the Italian oil giant to enter the country's oil sector to enable Uganda to exploit its vast oil reserves in the Albertine rift. However, Eni's proposed takeover of Heritage interests in two blocks faces a challenge from U.K.'s Tullow Oil PLC (TLW.LN), which holds a 50% stake in the blocks.
