The cumulative average return on the group stands at a plus 0.303 percent. News out of Germany this morning highlights the frailty of the economic recovery of the Euro-Zone's largest economy. Unemployment in Germany rose sharply in August, with the number of unemployed people jumping by 24,000 in seasonally adjusted terms following a revised rise of 12,000 in July. Economists polled were looking for a rise of just 7,000 in the number of unemployed. Sentiment indicators on the German economy have been faltering of late and this report will indeed add fuel to further declines. As expected, the European Central Bank (ECB) left its key interest rates unchanged. The minimum bid rate was held at a historically low 2.0 percent. Before the start of the regular session, Initial Jobless Claims for the week ending August 28 expected to have declined by 6,000, more than offsetting last weeks surprise 10,000 rise. Sharing the same time slot Second Quarter Productivity is expected to have been revised lower to a plus 2.7 percent from plus 2.9 percent. Back in the day when employment numbers failed to show the expected growth matching the rise in economic activity, it was the productivity of the American worker, which was partially responsible for keeping that number depressed. At 10:00 a.m., another report out of the factory gates via the July Factory Orders report. Orders are expected to have jumped by 1.1 percent, improving further on June's 0.7 percent rise. Keep an eye on your favorite retailers today as August Chain Store Same Store Sales will be released throughout the session. But it's not Andrew making headlines these days - it's Hurricanes Charley and Frances. As Frances makes its way to the southeastern Bahamas packing winds of 140 mph, reports already estimate it's twice as big as Charley in terms of size. Forecasts indicate it will make landfall in Florida by early Saturday. But should it fail to weaken beforehand, this would be the first time since 1915 where two hurricanes of such force made U.S. landfall in the same year. While Charley could cost the insurance industry an estimated US$6.8 billion, classifying it as the costliest storm since Andrew, there's no telling what kind of an impact Frances will have on the battered state. Insurance costs from Charley will reportedly cost Allstate an estimated US$425 million in pretax losses, the St. Paul Travelers Companies an estimated US$140 million, and the Hartford Financial Services Group an estimated US$91 million. While each of the insurance companies mentioned can now better withstand the pressures faced 12 year ago, look for further downside in each of the mentioned insurance companies. The 247Profits Group suggests buying puts on Allstate. Receive incisive economic/market commentary, profitable advice and access to a network of leading investment exports.
