Northrop Grumman Corp. (NOC) has agreed to pay an additional $25.8 million to the federal government to settle allegations that the company inflated the number of hours its employees worked on contracts for the U.S. Air Force, the Justice Department said Friday.

The government claimed that the defense-technology company overstated labor hours on two battlefield communication contracts worked between July 1, 2010, and Dec. 31, 2013 by people stationed in the Middle East.

The payment announced Friday, the Justice Department said, will result in a civil recovery of more than $27 million in connection with the matter.

The Justice Department said the Falls Church, Va.-based company also entered into a separate agreement with the criminal division of the U.S. attorney's office for the Southern District of California related to these contracts and agreed to pay an additional $4.2 million.

A Northrop Grumman representative couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

"Contractors that knowingly inflate their bills to the government will face serious consequences," Joseph Hunt, assistant attorney general at Department of Justice's civil division, said in a prepared statement.
