MEXICO CITY—A fire at an offshore platform run by Petró leos
Mexicanoskilled two workers and injured eight others, the Mexican
state oilcompany said Sunday.
Pemex said it isolated the area of the Abkatun-A platform where
the fire broke out and had managed to suffocate the fire.
Evacuation of the platform wasn't necessary.
One of the dead workers was a Pemex employee, and the other
worked for contractor Cotemar, Pemex said. The injured were flown
ashore for medical attention.
Pemex earlier reported nine injured in messages sent via its
official Twitter account.
No cause was given for the accident, which happened at 5:15 a.m.
local time Sunday.
An explosion at the same platform killed seven workers and
injured 16 in April.
That accident led to Pemex to shut in about 220,000 barrels a
day of crude oil production, which was gradually restored.
The Abkatun offshore oil-and-gas processing complex is located
in the southern Gulf of Mexico, where Pemex produces 1.78 million
barrels a day of crude out of total crude production of about 2.27
million barrels a day.
