ExxonMobil and the Volunteer Center of North Texas recognized this year's 75 interns and agencies participating in the 15th annual ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program (CSJP) at a reception today. In addition, former CSJP interns were honored as ExxonMobil Community Champions for their continued work in the nonprofit sector. "At ExxonMobil, we understand the challenges nonprofit organizations face and are proud to support the services provided to our community by these local agencies," said Paul Sullivan, vice president and general tax counsel, Exxon Mobil Corporation. "Over the past 15 years we've had the pleasure of introducing more than 1,000 Dallas area young adults to the nonprofit world and developing a new generation of community leaders. Like our Community Champions, these individuals can make a difference for nonprofits even after college." During the reception, held at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, Kimberly Rutigliano and Amy Taylor, former ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program interns, received the ExxonMobil Community Champions award for their commitment to nonprofits. These ExxonMobil Community Champions pursued full-time careers within the nonprofit sector after completing the program and graduating from college. Both Rutigliano and Taylor took advantage of previous nonprofit experience and have worked their way to management positions in two local nonprofit agencies. Rutigliano, now a program manager at AVANCE-Dallas, participated in the Community Summer Jobs Program in 1999 and Taylor, manager of the Institutional Giving at Dallas Theater Center, interned during the summer of 2000. Funded by ExxonMobil and administered by the Volunteer Center of Dallas County, the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program provides internships for college students and assists nonprofit organizations during the busy summer months. Throughout the eight week program, 75 interns will assist with summer projects and participate in professional enhancement workshops. ExxonMobil's grant, totaling more than $182,000, contributes to the interns' summer salary and assists the Volunteer Center of North Texas in facilitating this annual program. "The ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program meets the needs of numerous individuals both in the local community and on college campuses by providing significant support within nonprofit agencies and meaningful internships for deserving students," said Phyllis Bernstein, president of the board of directors, Volunteer Center of Dallas County. "Throughout the summer, everyone involved in this community-focused project will experience the positive impact of lending a helping hand and we're pleased to take part in this unique program." Dallas civic leader Ruben E. Esquivel, vice president for community and corporate relations, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, served as keynote speaker for the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs reception. Esquivel spoke about the importance of nonprofits in the Dallas area and the benefits this program provides agencies. In addition, Dallas Mayor, Laura Miller, addressed the value of the nonprofit sector to the City of Dallas. Since the program began in 1971 in New York City, ExxonMobil has provided more than $6.1 million to support nearly 3,000 community summer job internships in ten states including: Alabama, Alaska, California, Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia and Wyoming, as well as in Angola. In the Dallas program, ExxonMobil has provided $2.2 million to place more than 1,100 college students in summer internships.
