The ExxonMobil Foundation announced today its commitment of $1
million to help build a national memorial to Martin Luther King,
Jr. The Memorial celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. will be built on the National Mall in Washington,
D.C. "Martin Luther King, Jr. devoted his life to fighting for
equality for all mankind," said Gerald McElvy, President of the
ExxonMobil Foundation. "This Memorial is a great testament to his
impact on civil and human rights, not only in this nation but the
world at large. We're proud to be involved in this tribute to Dr.
King's life and legacy. It is fitting that we make this
announcement at the Alpha Phi Alpha 2006 Centennial Convention
given Dr. King's active and proud involvement with the fraternity,
which in turn has played a pivotal role in making this Memorial a
reality." The four-acre Memorial will be situated along the Tidal
Basin adjacent to the F.D.R. Memorial and in a direct line between
the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. Congress passed Joint
Resolutions in 1996 authorizing Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to
establish a memorial honoring Dr. King to be built in Washington,
D.C. "We appreciate the generous contribution of the ExxonMobil
Foundation to the Martin Luther King National Memorial," said Harry
E. Johnson, Sr., president and CEO of the Washington, D.C. Martin
Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc. "This
$1 million contribution increases the Memorial's fund-raising total
to $61 million of the needed $100 million to complete the project,
including its lifetime maintenance." Groundbreaking on the Memorial
is scheduled for late 2006, and construction is expected to be
completed in 2008. The mission of the Martin Luther King National
Memorial Project is to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. by leading a collaborative funding, design, and
construction process in the creation of a memorial to honor his
national and international contributions to world peace through
non-violent social change. In August, Congress authorized $10
million in matching funds for the Memorial. To learn more, please
