The ExxonMobil Foundation and the Volunteer Center of North Texas
have announced the 75 local nonprofit agencies selected to
participate in this year's ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs
Program. The agencies are now accepting applications from
undergraduate college students interested in a paid summer
internship and exposure to the nonprofit sector. The nonprofit
organizations will receive assistance during the summer months and,
in turn, the undergraduates receive hands-on work experience, learn
the value of community service and earn a salary. Seventy-five
students will participate in an eight-week paid internship program
designed to challenge, inspire and help develop skills necessary
for their future careers. Intern salaries and the Volunteer
Centers administrative expenses are funded through a grant from
the ExxonMobil Foundation totaling $200,000. We believe that
education is the cornerstone of opportunity and achievement.
Through the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program, students
learn about the nonprofit sector and obtain other skills that will
help them become successful in their chosen careers, said Gerald
McElvy, president of the ExxonMobil Foundation. Over the past 17
years many from this program have made significant contributions to
our community, and we are gratified to see a new cadre of future
community leaders lend a helping hand to useful neighborhood
organizations. The Volunteer Center of North Texas will provide
training to agencies on the recruiting, interviewing and selection
process, as well as assistance in organizing and managing the
summer internships. The participating agencies will select the
interns, who must be full-time undergraduate college students to
qualify. In addition to regular job responsibilities, interns
attend seminars designed to provide insight on the nonprofit
sector, the communitys needs and volunteerism. Students also
engage in community service activities. The ExxonMobil Community
Summer Jobs Program not only prepares college students for the
future, but it also meets the needs of nonprofit organizations in
the Dallas area, said Phyllis Bernstein, chair, the Volunteer
Centers Dallas County Council on Volunteerism. We are thankful
for ExxonMobils continuous support of this important program and
cultivating a sense of community spirit. Now in its 17th year in
Dallas and 36th year nationwide, ExxonMobil has provided more than
$7.7 million to support almost 3,700 community summer job
internships in 10 states including: Alabama, Alaska, California,
Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia and Wyoming,
and internationally in Angola. In the Dallas program, ExxonMobil
has provided more than $2.5 million to place more than 1,250
college students in summer internships. College students interested
in internship positions may contact the selected agencies,
university career planning and placement offices, or the Volunteer
Center of North Texas. For a list of participating agencies, visit
