Authorities were unable to find an unauthorized person said to
have entered Exxon Mobil's (XOM) massive Baytown refinery near
Houston on Saturday.
"Harris County Sheriff's Department has concluded their search
for an individual suspected to be on ExxonMobil property," Todd
Spitler, an Exxon spokesman, said in an email.
A dispatcher at the sheriff's office said "someone jumped the
fence" early Saturday morning and that they then spent hours
searching for the person with a team of dogs.
With a processing capacity of 560,000 barrels a day, Baytown is
the nation's second-largest refinery.
"We take matters of this nature very seriously," the Exxon
spokesman said, adding the person entered the refinery at about
7:30 a.m. local time. Some of the plant's operations were
interrupted due to the incident, but most of the workforce has been
returned to their duties, and production rates remain normal, Exxon
said. The incident comes two days after a fire at the refinery sent
a huge plume of smoke into the air.
