Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) reported multiple process unit shutdowns and gas emissions that began Wednesday and continued Thursday at its Baytown refinery in Texas.

"Pipe Still 8 atmospheric tower developed a leak to atmosphere and associated fire, resulting in the shutdown of multiple refinery process units and safe utilization of the flare system," the refinery said in a statement to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. "The fire was extinguished and operational adjustments were made to isolate the leak and minimize emissions, including reducing unit rates and/or shutting down affected units."

It also reported an unplanned compressor shutdown and gas emissions Wednesday "due to instrument malfunction resulted in safe utilization of the flare system." It said the compressor was returned to service and the unit returned to normal operation.

The 561,000-barrel-a-day Baytown refinery is located 25 miles east of Houston.
