Essential workers at a French site of Exxon Mobil Corp.-owned Esso will be requisitioned as soon as Wednesday as the French government intervenes to end blockages at storage depots and refineries across the country and restore supplies in gas stations.

Workers at Esso's Port-Jerome site in Normandy will be requisitioned starting Wednesday, French Energy Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher said in a tweet.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne told the National Assembly on Tuesday that she had requested the requisition of Esso workers essential to the operation of the company's gasoline-storage depots.

The move follows the decision by some unions to continue the blockages despite an agreement being reached with a majority of representatives on Monday, she said. "We cannot accept this," Ms. Borne said.

Workers at Esso and French oil major TotalEnergies SE have been striking since late last month, demanding wage increases. The situation has led to shortages at French gas stations.

According to Ms. Borne, 30% of the country's gas stations had run out of at least one product as of Monday.

She reiterated a call for dialogue between worker representatives and employers.
