Canadian National Railway has placed an order with Wabtec to modernize a further 60 locomotives in its existing fleet in an effort to improve reliability and contribute to reducing its rail carbon footprint.

Wabtec's services team will modernize CN's Dash-9 locomotives, bringing the total modernized fleet to 110 locomotives, transforming the trains to AC- from DC-powered traction and adding enhancements such as an engine upgrade and suite of digital solutions, CN said Wednesday.

The upgrades are expected to extend the life of the locomotives and provide benefits, including targeted fuel efficiency improvements of up to 18%, a more than 40% increase in reliability, and up to a 55% increase in pulling power, the rail operator said.

CN expects the total program will realize up to about 50,000 metric tons in annual greenhouse gas emission reductions, the equivalent of removing nearly 10,700 non-electric passenger cars, and will reuse or recycle about 11,000 metric tons of steel.
