ARNHEM, The Netherlands, November 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
ARCADIS (EURONEXT: ARCAD), the international consulting, design,
engineering and management services company, announced today that
it will modernize the safety system for the Rotterdam subway
network. The company, commissioned by U.S. corporation General
Electric (GE), will design and test the safety system and manage
the migration from the old to the new system. GE will deliver the
software and the installation. GE is working on behalf of Rotterdam
Electric Tram company (RET) for a total contact amount of EUR 62
million. The ARCADIS share in this assignment amounts to more than
EUR 5 million. The project is expected to last through to 2014, the
company announced on Sunday. The Rotterdam subway system will
remain operational during this complex upgrade. The design will
take into account that all work will be carried out at night. All
new components will be continuously tested before a rail line is
put back into operation. This activity is also part of the
agreement with GE which in total covers 47 stations and around 55km
of double track rail lines which are used by 88 million passengers
per year. ARCADIS has years of experience in rail safety system
design. "This is the first time ever in Europe that an entire
subway safety system will be replaced," said Michiel Jaski,
executive board member of ARCADIS. "Nearly all of the subway
systems in Europe have been built around the same period and will
also need replacement. A choice has been made to use an existing
and proven cost-effective technology that is extremely reliable.
With this, ARCADIS again proves its track record in working on
these extraordinarily complex projects." ARCADIS is an
