FRANKFURT--German new car registrations fell 5.6% in October from a year earlier, the federal motor vehicles office KBA said on Wednesday, reversing September growth supported by private buyers.

Commercial vehicles accounted for nearly two-thirds of October's 262,724 new registrations. The data follows a 9.4% rise in September, which was fueled by private demand.

New registrations, a mirror of sales, were down for all German brands. Volkswagen sales plunged almost 20% from the year-earlier month, while Porsche dropped 13%.

Earlier Wednesday, French data showed a 4% drop in October registrations, after a 2.5% rise in September and August's 6.7% increase.

For 2016, German car manufacturer association VDA has forecast a moderate gain. During the first 10 months of the year, registrations rose 4.9% from the year-earlier period. Last year, German new car sales jumped 9.3%.

European car-maker association ACEA will provide October registration data for Europe on Nov. 17. In the first nine months, European new car sales advanced 8% to 11.2 million vehicles.
