NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE AT DEBENHAMS PLC


The  Board  of  Debenhams plc announces  that  Terry  Green  has
resigned  as  a Director and Chief Executive of the  company  to
pursue a new business opportunity.

Belinda  Earl,  Trading  Director,  has  been  appointed   Chief
Executive with immediate effect.

Peter Jarvis, Chairman of Debenhams, said:

'I  am delighted to announce the appointment of Belinda Earl  as
Debenhams' new Chief Executive.  We have an excellent management
team  at  Debenhams with considerable strength in depth. Belinda
has  been  a  key  member of the team for  many  years  and  her
appointment   is  the  natural  next  step  for  the   business.
Debenhams is well poised to build on its leading market position
and the successful strategy we have developed over recent years.

I   would   like  to  thank  Terry  Green  for  his  significant
contribution  to Debenhams over the past 12 years, during  which
Debenhams  has become Britain's Favourite department store.   We
have  all enjoyed working with him and we wish him well for  the
future.'

Belinda  Earl said: 'This is a marvellous opportunity and  I  am
delighted  to  have been asked to take it on. We have  a  first-
class team at Debenhams and I look forward to working with  them
to build on our powerful track record.'

Terry Green said: 'After nearly nine years as Chief Executive of
Debenhams  I have taken the decision to resign to pursue  a  new
challenge.  I  am confident that the business is  well  set  for
continuing success under the leadership of Belinda Earl.'

Michael    Sharp,   in   addition   to   his    current    Board
responsibilities,  will  take on the  divisions  previously  the
responsibility of Belinda Earl.

BELINDA EARL

Belinda Earl, 38, is an Executive Director of Debenhams plc.

Following graduation from the University College of Wales with a
degree in Economics and Business, Belinda started her career  in
retailing with Harrods.

She  joined  Debenhams in 1985 and has held a number  of  senior
positions within Buying and Merchandising, covering all  product
areas.

In  1993, she was appointed Buying and Merchandising Director  -
lingerie, accessories and childrenswear.  Three years later  she
became Buying and Merchandising Director - womenswear.  In 1997,
she was appointed Trading Director and joined the PLC board   in
early 1999.

During  her career at Debenhams, her responsibilities have  also
covered  Designers at Debenhams, distribution,  fashion  PR  and
market research.

Belinda Earl is married with one son and lives in Surrey.
