Cingular Shines With Sun's Field Application High-Tech Industry Leader Powers Custom SOSMART Solution for Field Engineers With Cingular's National, High-Speed GPRS/EDGE Wireless Data Network ATLANTA, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems has selected Cingular Wireless' nationwide*, high-speed GPRS/EDGE network to keep members of its U.S. field service team wirelessly connected to critical company data. Sun has equipped some 300, US deployed field engineers with Cingular- enabled palmOne(TM) Treo(TM) 600s and Treo 650s, accessing Sun's custom Java- based field service case management application, called SOSMART. Sun expects to roll out the mobile field service solution to a total of 600 software/hardware engineers. With SOSMART, Sun field engineers receive a Cingular Enterprise Paging alert on their device regarding a new service ticket, and then have the ability to wirelessly retrieve case and task information from Sun's "Radiance" back-end ticketing system. The GPRS/EDGE-powered solution - featuring a converged voice and data device - replaces a pager- and cellphone-based solution that was costlier, more labor intensive and only provided field personnel with minimal information while in the field. "Sun required a wireless provider that not only had a robust data network with broad, national coverage but also had the expertise to work with us to deploy our SOSMART solution to a mobile environment," said Kevin Coyne, vice president of educational services for Sun Microsystems. "Cingular Wireless, through its EDGE network and sales and data consulting organization, was able to meet those needs and help us begin deployment quickly and efficiently. We are confident that this solution will help meet our goals of streamlining our cost structure and delivering excellence in customer service." Cingular's GPRS/EDGE service is the largest and fastest national wireless data network in the U.S. with availability in 13,000 cities and towns, and along 40,000 miles of interstate highways. "This latest initiative with Sun Microsystems represents another milestone in a long and outstanding relationship between our two companies," said Hope Helmbrecht, regional vice president-west region, for Cingular Wireless. "We have worked together in the past as users of each other's cutting-edge services, and Cingular couldn't be more pleased now to be selected to help wirelessly enable this high-tech industry leader's critical applications in the field." Cingular Wireless provides wireless services to 95 of the Fortune 100 companies, and counts more than 80 percent of the Fortune 500 and over 1,200 federal, state and local government agencies as customers.
