College Football Fans Select Oklahoma's Jason White as the Cingular
Wireless/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Week ATLANTA, Nov. 8
/PRNewswire/ -- The Cingular Wireless/ABC Sports All- America
Player of the Week award will have a home in Norman, Oklahoma, for
the second week in a row. That's because college football fans have
selected Oklahoma senior quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate
Jason White as the Cingular Wireless/ABC Sports All-America Player
of the Week for the first time this season. Sooners running back
Adrian Peterson won the award last week (he also won on October 9),
and he and White are the only two teammates to win the award this
season. White, last year's Heisman winner, threw for 292 yards and
five touchdowns in Oklahoma's 45-38 come-from-behind win at No. 22
Texas A&M Saturday to help the team remain undefeated and in
the national championship hunt. For the year, White has passed for
2,130 yards and 25 touchdowns, which ranks third in the country. He
has thrown only four interceptions. White is among nine players
listed on ESPN.com's weekly Heisman Watch, which samples ESPN
college football experts to provide the definitive look at the race
for the Heisman Trophy. White was one of four candidates for the
All-America Player of the Week, who are selected by a panel of ABC
Sports and ESPN college football analysts, led by John Saunders.
The other finalists this week included: Texas running back Cedric
Benson, who rushed for 142 yards and five touchdowns in the
Longhorns' 56-35 victory over No. 19 Oklahoma State; Ohio State
wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr., who scored three touchdowns on a run,
reception and punt return, in the Buckeyes' 32-19 win at Michigan
State; and Virginia Tech running back Mike Imoh, who totaled 243
yards on the ground and two touchdowns in the Hokies' 27-24 at
North Carolina. The Cingular Wireless/ABC Sports All-America Player
of the Week honor marks the first time in college football history
where fans are in command and can vote on who they think deserves
to be the All-America Player of the Week. The candidates are
announced during ESPN "SportsCenter" following "College GameDay
Final" each Saturday night. Fans have from that time until 8 p.m.
Eastern Time on Sunday to text-message their votes or submit them
online at http://www.abcsportsallamerica.com/ or at ESPN.com
(keyword: cingular). The winner is announced during the 11 p.m.
