The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics
reported that in 2013 the unemployment rate for Gulf War-era II
veterans with disabilities (those who served since 2001) was 8.6
percent, versus 9 percent for other veterans.
"We are absolutely committed to helping veterans and veterans
with disabilities find employment," said Sandra Evers-Manly, vice president, global
corporate responsibility, Northrop Grumman, and president, the
Northrop Grumman Foundation. "First, thanks to their training,
skills, ability to work under pressure and in teams, and their
demonstrated success at overcoming adversity, they can be great
employees. Second, employers can honor the contributions made
by these men and women by providing employment opportunities and a
chance for them to fully participate in the society they have
helped protect."
In 2005, Northrop Grumman created Operation IMPACT (Injured
Military Pursuing Assisted Career Transition) a unique,
award-winning diversity program focused on assisting severely
wounded service members and their families as they transition from
the military to the private-sector. In 2009, Northrop Grumman
started the Operation IMPACT Network of Champions, to partner with
other companies and expand employment opportunities for veterans
with disabilities. Today, 85 companies take part in this network
and many are participating in the job symposium at Fort Hood.
"The wounded warrior employment symposiums give us the
opportunity to have personal interaction with our service men and
women, to hear their concerns and help them overcome any challenges
to employment," said Karen Stang,
Northrop Grumman Operation IMPACT program administrator. "The
symposiums also give our Operation IMPACT Network of Champions
member companies and supporting organizations in government and
military the chance to meet with veterans with disabilities and
discuss employment."
In July, Northrop Grumman sponsored the Northern Virginia
Technology Council Employment Initiative to accelerate veterans'
transition to civilian life by creating more employment
opportunities with Virginia
technology companies.
