Authorities continued to search Saturday for an unauthorized person who entered Exxon Mobil's (XOM) massive Baytown refinery near Houston, but the plant continues to operate normally.

"Someone jumped the fence," a dispatcher at the Harris County Sheriff's Office said by telephone. "We sent out the canines."

With a processing capacity of 560,000 barrels a day, Baytown is the nation's second-largest refinery.

Exxon spokesman Todd Spitler said in an email the person entered the complex at about 7:30 a.m. local time. "We take matters of this nature very seriously," he said, adding Exxon is working with local authorities and the person may still be on the property.

Some of the plant's operations were interrupted due to the incident, but Mr. Spitler said "the majority of the workforce has been released back to work," and production rates remain normal.

The incident comes two days after a fire at the refinery sent a huge plume of smoke into the air.
