FRANKFURT--German registrations of new cars rose 12% in May, confirming the recent trend of growing demand across much of Europe, with auto makers taking market share from Volkswagen AG's VW brand in its home market.

Germany's motor vehicle authority KBA said on Thursday that new car registrations rose to 286,931 in May from the same month the previous year after an 8.4% gain in April. Year-to-date sales were 6.8% higher than in the same period of 2015, the KBA said.

Sales of Volkswagen AG's VW-branded cars fell 0.6% in May, with its market share dropping to 19% from 20% in April. The auto maker, Europe's largest by sales, is grappling with an emissions-cheating scandal than broke last year.
