MMS Fuels Syniverse’s Robust Mobile Messaging Growth

As consumers become increasingly dependent on mobile devices to
share life moments captured in pictures and videos, Syniverse
Technologies (NYSE:SVR) continued its global multimedia messaging
service (MMS) market leadership during third quarter 2010, posting
128 percent organic growth in MMS traffic year over year.
In particular, Syniverse saw explosive growth on Halloween, with
MMS volumes up 150 percent organically over 2009 for that single
day. President and CEO Tony Holcombe said it is no surprise that
the company consistently sees distinct spikes appearing around
major holidays and events.
“Interacting with and sharing mobile pictures and video is
rapidly becoming a part of our everyday lives,” Holcombe explained.
“Syniverse has played a central role in driving this evolution by
enabling consumers to instantly share memories with friends, family
and colleagues anywhere in the world.”
In terms of total peer-to-peer (P2P) messages, which include MMS
and short message service (SMS), Syniverse moved an average of 1.6
billion messages per day during third quarter 2010, with overall
P2P volumes up 35 percent versus third quarter 2009. That average
is the equivalent of 1.1 million messages every minute or 18,519
per second across mobile service providers worldwide. Even more
impressive, the company has processed more than 1 trillion P2P
messages since 2007.
Holcombe said he expects the steady MMS growth trend to continue
for both Syniverse and the industry, a vision supported by Portio
Research’s forecast that worldwide MMS revenue will exceed $51
billion by the end of 2014.
In addition to Syniverse’s clear P2P momentum,
application-to-peer (A2P) messaging volumes in the company’s Mobile
Enterprise Services (MES) portfolio grew 69 percent from third
quarter 2009. The company’s A2P customer roster has nearly doubled
over that same period, adding more than 60 new MES customers,
including the recent additions of a major Tier 1 financial services
company as well as a Tier 1 global logistics company.
“The increasing ubiquity of mobile communications between not
only end users, but also consumers and businesses, has propelled
Syniverse and the industry to reach new messaging milestones in the
past year,” Holcombe said. “Service providers, enterprises, brands
and even social networks are beginning to use messaging in creative
ways that extend far beyond one-way texts. Marketing, customer
service and brand retention efforts all benefit from the reach and
immediacy of two-way messaging communications, and we believe it is
these emerging use cases that have encouraged our new customers to
make the investment in mobile messaging.”
