Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, a subsidiary of Teva Pharmaceutical
Industries Ltd. (NYSE:TEVA) and Volunteers in Medicine (VIM), a
national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping communities
provide free primary healthcare clinics for families and
individuals, today announced their 2014 National Partnership to
make healthcare services more readily available to the
uninsured.
Currently, there are 96 VIM clinics in 29 states, providing free
general primary care, medications and patient education programs –
as well as specialized services such as pediatrics, dentistry,
ophthalmology and counseling at some clinics – to thousands of
people without access to care. This partnership will strengthen
VIM’s ability to open additional clinics across the U.S., increase
support services to VIM clinics, and promote awareness of the
organization. In addition, Teva will provide monetary contributions
to support the operations of VIM clinics located near a Teva
business presence.
“At Teva, we make quality healthcare accessible to patients
around the world. This is not only a business objective, but also a
philanthropic commitment,” said Allan Oberman, President and CEO,
Teva Americas Generics. “Through partnerships like this, Teva helps
to increase access to our medicines and improve the overall health
of our local communities.”
Teva provides access to healthcare not only through its business
model of developing, manufacturing and marketing high quality
generic and specialty medicines, but also through significant
philanthropic programs, complemented by key alliances with partners
– such as VIM – that advance a common commitment to address unmet
medical needs.
VIM supports communities by offering planning assistance at no
charge to local organizing individuals or teams that have
identified the need for a VIM clinic. VIM staff members guide the
clinic development process, providing resources, insight, and
support through each phase of the clinic development process. Once
open, each clinic becomes a member of the VIM Alliance,
eligible to receive ongoing services from the national office.
“This partnership is a tremendous opportunity for VIM and Teva
to achieve mutual goals of expanding the delivery of healthcare
services to the uninsured,” said Amy Hamlin, Executive Director of
VIM. “Additionally, the lives of medical and non-medical volunteers
are enriched by serving neighbors in need.”
VIM patients have nowhere else to go for healthcare services:
they earn too much to qualify for government assistance; work in
low-wage jobs that do not offer health insurance; or earn too
little to purchase health insurance on their own. Teva and VIM look
forward to working together in 2014, helping to provide access to
quality healthcare to these patients around the country.
