German new car registrations decreased 16% on the year in December due to overall difficult economic conditions, international vehicle manufacturing association VDIK said Thursday, adding it doesn't expect demand will improve in 2013.

MAIN FACTS:

-Around 204,000 new cars were registered in December, the association said.

-In the full year of 2012, around 3.08 million new cars were registered, which is down 2.9% compared to the previous year.

-"If the economic situation stabilizes and the existing consumer sentiment also translates into demand for cars, its possible new car registrations in 2013 will reach between 3.0 million and the 2012 figure of 3.08 million," VDIK president Volker Lange said.
