RWE said it has been selected together with Mitsui & Co. and Osaka Gas by the Japanese government to construct and operate a commercial-scale wind farm off the coast of two Japanese cities.

The Germany-based energy company said Wednesday that the consortium would develop, construct and operate the offshore wind farm off the west coast cities of Murakami and Tainai, Niigata Prefecture. Financial details weren't disclosed.

The project is planned to have a capacity of 684 megawatts and is expected to consist of 38 winds turbines, significantly contributing to Japan's renewable-energy targets. It will also support the creation of local jobs and strengthen domestic and regional supply chains.

This marks RWE's first success in an offshore-wind project in Japan, the company said.

Full commissioning is scheduled for June 2029.
