PR Newswire (US)
MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Cingular Wireless and Hubbard
Broadcasting, Inc. have teamed together to provide a free text
messaging service that will send text alerts about school closings,
school delays and winter weather advisories in metropolitan
Minneapolis/St. Paul and surrounding areas. The text messages are
available to any person who registers his/her wireless handset from
any wireless carrier in the area, provided that the handset can
receive text messages. (Logo:

is a collaboration of Cingular Wireless and 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS,
KS-95-FM, AM 1500 and FM107/WFMP and is offered as a community
service to assist people in dealing with situations caused by
unexpected weather events in the area. Additionally, 5 EYEWITNESS
NEWS Chief meteorologist Dave Dahl records 15-second and 30-second
weather spots for the radio stations regarding school closings and
delays. "We are happy to provide these weather-related text
messages as a public service to residents of the Minneapolis/St.
Paul and surrounding areas," said Jeff Harkman, regional vice
president and general manager for Cingular Wireless. "We are
thrilled to be a part of this community and are excited to be able
to use our technology to make everyday life a little more
convenient." Registrants can be customers of any wireless carrier
in the area, and registration in the program is free. Handsets must
have an area code local to the area to participate. Under the
program, Cingular and Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc. notify wireless
customers via text messaging of important weather-related
information applicable to the area, such as school closings and
delays, severe and winter weather warnings and snow emergencies.
Participants may register their individual handsets in the program
by completing an electronic registration form on-line that is
accessible through the Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc. web sites
including: http://www.kstp.com/, http://www.ks95.com/,
http://www.am1500.com/ and http://www.fm107.fm/ or by visiting
http://www.cingular.com/schoolclosings. Handsets must be registered
during each annual program period, which typically runs from
October through April. Following registration, a participant's
first alert can be expected within approximately 48 hours. Alerts
will not be received where wireless carriers have no or inadequate
coverage. Standard text messaging rates of your wireless carrier
apply for any messages sent or received as a part of this program.
