The following table lists unplanned and planned production
outages at U.S. refineries as reported by Dow Jones Newswires. The
information is compiled from both official and unofficial refining
sources and doesn't purport to be a comprehensive list.
Planned maintenance has been completed at Tesoro's 120,000
barrel-a-day refinery in Anacortes, Washington, according to a Nov.
15, statement by company communications specialist Megan Arredondo.
Unspecified units had been down since Oct. 12, and the refinery has
now returned to planned production
Refining units are being brought back on line at the 342,000
barrel-a-day Phillips 66 refinery in Wood River, Illinois,
according to traders doing business with the company. An
unspecified number of units were taken off line late September and
more recent issues have affected the restart of units.
A refining unit was "upset" and flaring ensued at Shell Oil
Company's 327,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Deep Park, Texas, on
Nov. 12, according to the U.S. National Response Center.
A Nov. 14 power outage hit the 255,000 barrel-a-day refinery
owned and operated by Motiva, a Shell/Saudi Refining joint venture,
in Convent, Louisiana, according to the U.S. National Response
Center. An unknown amount of emission resulted, but it wasn't known
which unit was affected.
An unplanned flaring event took place on Nov. 14 at Motiva's
Norco, St. Charles, Louisiana 250,000 barrel-a-day refinery due to
a compressor tripping off line, according to the U.S. National
Response Center. The company was attempting to restart the
compressor.
Hess Corp. said on Nov. 14 it has begun the process of
restarting it's 70,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Port Reading, NJ.,
and that operations should resume by the end of the week. The
refinery was shutdown on Oct. 29, ahead of Hurricane Sandy and was
unable to restart because of power issues
Irving Oil said on Nov. 14 it expects it's 300,000 barrel-a-day
Saint John refinery in New Brunswick, Canada to be fully
operational within the week, following the completion of it's
annual maintenance. The annual turnaround got underway in early
September.
A gas compressor tripped off line at Phillips 66/Cenovus 362,000
barrel-a-day refinery in Wood River, Ill., on Nov. 13, according to
a state government filing. The even caused an excessive release of
emissions, but it wasn't know which unit was affected. A refining
unit was also upset at the same facility on Nov. 9.
Valero Energy Corp. said on Nov. 13 that it's fluid catalytic
cracker at the 160,000 barrel-a-day Houston, Texas, refinery had
bee restarted following eight weeks of planned turnaround
maintenance.
Valero Energy Corp. said on Nov. 13 that a fluid catalytic
cracker at it's 310,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Port Arthur,
Texas, was ramping towards normal rates after an unplanned shutdown
on Nov. 3, due to a pump fire.
A hydrocracker at ExxonMobil's 152,000 barrel-a-day refinery in
Torrance, Calif., was in restart mode on Nov. 12 after being taken
offline on Nov. 3, for repairs, according to traders and marketers
doing business with the company.
An unplanned emission event took place the morning of Nov. 9, at
the 250,000 barrel-a-day Motiva refinery in St. Charles, La, due to
blocked valves, according to the U.S. National Response Center. It
wasn't known which unit was affected.
An unplanned flaring event and unspecified unit shut down took
place on Nov. 9, at Tesoro Corp's 165,000 barrel-a-day Martinez,
Calif., refinery due to a vapor leak, according to a local
government filing. No product shortages were evident, according to
Tesoro spokeswoman Tina Barbee.
Phillips 66 (PSX) on Nov. 7 said planned flaring would take
place at its 140,000 barrel-a-day Carson, Calif., refinery between
Nov. 10-23. The flaring isn't associated with equipment breakdown,
the filing to government regulators said.
Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) said on Nov. 7 it plans to restart a
flexicoker unit, shut since Sept. 11 to repair a heat exchanger, at
its Baytown, Texas, refinery in a few weeks. An exact restart
timing isn't yet available. The company originally said the
maintenance would take several weeks to be completed.
CVR Energy (CVI) on Nov. 7 said turnaround work at its
Wynnewood, Okla., refinery has been extended by five to 10 days to
50-55 days, from Sept 29 when a blast occurred. One worker died in
that explosion.
