DICOM Group plc: Development Investment Agreement
DICOM Group plc ("DICOM Group"), a global leader in the Electronic Document
Capture ("EDC") market, announces that its wholly owned US subsidiary, Kofax,
has signed a development investment agreement with In-Q-Tel, the private,
independent, non-profit venture capital group funded by the Central Intelligence
Agency (CIA), to advance document exploitation technologies.
Kofax, the world's largest information capture vendor, will combine and enhance
its industry-leading information capture applications and its Mohomine
classification technology to support document exploitation activities conducted
by government organisations. The initial In-Q-Tel investment round is
approximately $350,000 for research, development and productization.
In-Q-Tel's mission is to invest in cutting-edge technology firms that provide
advanced dual-use technologies that can assist its government customers more
effectively complete their missions. The process of transforming collected
documents into actionable information, termed Document Exploitation, is
important in both commercial and government markets because it enables users to
cull through volumes of data to find salient pieces of information more
efficiently.
According to Arnold von Buren, Chief Executive Officer at DICOM Group,
information capture and text classification technologies have already been
proven in the private sector. Now, with Kofax's help, In-Q-Tel can deliver these
commercial document exploitation solutions to the Intelligence Community more
rapidly.
"Today, most organisations and analysts are overwhelmed with the amount and type
of unstructured data they must analyse every day such as Web pages, news
articles, e-mail, cables, and myriad printed and handwritten document types,"
said von Buren. "It can be extremely difficult to methodically sort and filter
through these documents to uncover actionable data."
The terms of the In-Q-Tel agreement include licensing of Ascent Capture products
as well as Mohomine MohoClassifier. These technologies will enable national
security organisations to address several issues related to unstructured data.
"With the combination of Kofax's information capture and its Mohomine automated
text-classification technology offerings, the intelligence community now convert
all forms of printed and electronic documents into useful and exploitable
information of potential value. In both the business world and in government,
this can mean significant time and cost savings," said Gilman Louie, In-Q-Tel
chief executive officer.
In April of 2003, DICOM Group and Kofax acquired the Mohomine product line to
grow the organisation's traditional capture markets by further automating the
capture of unstructured textual data. "Our agreement with In-Q-Tel is another
milestone for our worldwide organisation and directly reflects the progress we
have made with the integration of Mohomine technologies into our product
portfolio. The acquisition of the Mohomine product line continues to open doors
for us," said von Buren.
