Kathy Savitt, Yahoo Inc.'s media and marketing head and a key lieutenant to Chief Executive Marissa Mayer, is leaving the Internet company to join Hollywood studio STX Entertainment.

Ms. Savitt, one of Ms. Mayer's first hires in 2012, oversaw marketing during a period in which Yahoo has failed to grow meaningful traction with advertisers and reverse its losses in market share to Google Inc. and Facebook Inc.

The executive saw her role expand at Yahoo following Ms. Mayer's firing of Henrique de Castro in early 2014, at which point Ms. Savitt added oversight of the company's media division, which included news and video.

"We appreciate her contributions to Yahoo over the past three years and wish her well," a Yahoo spokeswoman said in an emailed statement. "We have strong leaders in both Yahoo's media and marketing organization who will continue to drive the business forward."

Ms. Mayer has reshuffled top executives frequently in her three years as CEO. In April, the former head of Yahoo's home page, Mike Kerns, departed from the company and Simon Khalaf, an executive who joined when Yahoo acquired his startup, mobile-ad network Flurry, was promoted to senior vice president overseeing the home page and Tumblr.

Ms. Savitt was named president of digital at STX, a Los Angeles startup aiming to create a film, television and digital-content studio. The company has backing from TPG Growth, as well as China's Hony Capital and Huayi Brothers Media Corp. The studio's first film, "The Gift," has performed well, grossing $40.8 million since it was released last month.

Ms. Savitt will report to STX CEO Robert Simonds, the company said Friday in a release.
