German new car registrations were up on the year in July, supported by increased registrations of several German automobile brands, the federal vehicle office Kraftfahrtbundesamt, or KBA, said Friday.

MAIN FACTS:

-A total of 253,146 cars were registered in July, up 2.1% on the year.

-The brands Mini, Mercedes, BMW and Opel showed registration growth at a double-digit rate.

-Volkswagen accounted for about 22% of registrations during the month, but total VW registrations fell 5.1% on the year during July.
