World leaders and politicians reacted to Thursday's suspected terrorist attack by a truck driver who ploughed his vehicle through Bastille Day revelers in the French city of Nice, killing at least 80 people. Here are some of their remarks.

French President Franç ois Hollande

"France has been struck on its national day July 14, a symbol of freedom, because human rights are denied by fanatics, and France is of course their target.

"Nothing will make us give up in our will to fight against terrorism."

"This attack, whose terrorist characteristics are undeniable, is once again absolute violence"

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve

"We are at war with terrorists who want to strike us at any cost and in an extremely violent way."

U.S. President Barack Obama

"We stand in solidarity and partnership with France, our oldest ally, as they respond to and recover from this attack.

"On this Bastille Day, we are reminded of the extraordinary resilience and democratic values that have made France an inspiration to the entire world, and we know that the character of the French Republic will endure long after this devastating and tragic loss of life."

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton:

"It's clear we are at war with these terrorist groups and what they represent. It's a different kind of war and we need to be smart about how we wage it and win it."

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry

"Our embassy in Paris is making every effort to account for the welfare of U.S. citizens in Nice...Any U.S. citizens in Nice should contact friends and family directly to inform them of their well-being."

U.S. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan

"Our hearts are with the victims of what appears to be yet another unconscionable act of terror. In the coming days, we'll learn more about who did this and why. For now we must stand strong with the people of our dear friend and ally France."

Nicolas Sarkozy, former French President, on Twitter

"Deep emotion and infinite sadness in the face of the attack"

Didier Reynders, foreign minister of Belgium, on Twitter

"Barbarity has again killed and injured the innocent."
