The Carroll Shelby Foundation just finished a successful year supporting various individuals and organizations in accordance with Carroll Shelby’s charitable vision. Organizations blessed by the helping hand of CSF throughout the year include the Children’s Organ Transplant Association, Eli Home, the Carroll Shelby Automotive Technology Program and Northern Ugandan native, Evelyn Apoko.

“The Carroll Shelby Foundation was one of Carroll’s highest priorities, and still is to those who love him and respect his legacy,” said Neil Cummings, co-CEO of Shelby International, Inc., CEO of Carroll Shelby Licensing and Carroll Shelby Foundation Trustee. “We continue to follow Carroll’s vision when he started the Foundation, which is helping kids through all aspects of life. Whether the need is physical or skill-based, our goal is to make sure every child has the chance to start life out right.”

The Foundation supported Ms. Apoko in 2014. An ex-child slave from Uganda who survived a long-term kidnapping, she has undergone numerous surgeries to repair the severe injuries received in a bomb blast while being held captive. After making her way to the United States, she is receiving support from Lifeworks, an Austin, Texas, non-profit that helps youth and young adults with counseling, life skills and transitional housing.

Finally in a secure environment, Evelyn is actively pursuing the education denied her by life events in Africa. Her goal is to ultimately complete a four-year degree and become a social worker or counselor to help others who have experienced trauma. The Carroll Shelby Foundation is helping make that possible by donating a large portion of the funds she needs to complete her General Education Development certificate and then continue her education at Austin Community College in Austin.

“Carroll spent a great deal of time in Africa in the ‘70s and came to love the people there,” said Joe Conway, co-CEO of Carroll Shelby International, CEO of Shelby American and Carroll Shelby Foundation co-Trustee. “I’m sure if Carroll had the chance to know Evelyn, he would have admired her desire to improve her life. She certainly impressed us.”

The Foundation also gave their support to the Children’s Organ Transplant Association by donating proceeds from the annual Shelby ornament to their cause. COTA provides assistance and support to families who are facing a life-saving transplant through fundraising.

In 2014, CSF worked closely with the Eli Home once again. Eli Home, founded by Mike and Lorri Galloway in 1983, is a shelter for abused children and their mothers. Today, the Eli Home is a multi-faceted faith-based organization with three shelter facilities, a 13,000-square-foot thrift store social enterprise, corporate offices, professional counseling and therapy staff, organizational staff, dedicated volunteers and board members. Its history of awards and accolades include citations from U.S. Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton. The Foundation made a sizable donation to the Eli Home recently.

The Foundation continued to sponsor a program that was close to Carroll’s heart last year, the Carroll Shelby Automotive Technology Center. Part of Northeast Texas Community College, it is designed to aid young people through scholarships and educational programs in automotive and related fields. The program grooms the automotive professionals of tomorrow by teaching them in-depth knowledge of computers, technology and mechanics. Students can earn certificates and degrees in the automotive field to help them meet their future career goals. The Foundation funds many of the staff salaries and scholarships.
