America Scores Receives Computer Associates Grant to Improve Children's Fitness And Literacy -America SCORES Poetry Slams! Kick off Today- NEW YORK, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- America SCORES today announced that Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA), one of the world's largest software companies, is helping to sponsor the development of unique programs that use soccer and literacy to inspire the physical, social and academic well-being of children. A CA grant to America SCORES will fund programs in Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver and New York. The announcement coincides today with the kick off of America SCORES Poetry Slams! across the country. "America SCORES Poetry Slams! involve more than 2,800 children from inner city communities taking the stage and performing their own original works of poetry and prose," says Paul Caccamo, President, America SCORES. "CA support is enabling year-long workshops for America SCORES students that will lead to Poetry Slams! in 2004. At a time when many after-school programs are facing cuts from federal and local sources of funding, socially conscious companies like CA are helping to ensure that our students are able to continue learning on the soccer field and in the classroom." America SCORES is the nation's only after-school program offering 8 to 12 year olds the opportunity to play soccer while teaching them how to express themselves through creative writing. Programs are located in urban areas and focus on kids who are at-risk of academic failure. The program directly addresses two of the most important concerns of American families: literacy and fitness. At the same time, America SCORES programs revitalize whole communities by involving teachers, parents, and community leaders as volunteers. The Poetry Slams! are the culminating events of the fall season of America SCORES. This year, Poetry Slams! take place in Denver on November 13th, San Francisco on November 14th, Seattle on November 15th, New York on November 18th, Los Angeles on November 20th, Boston on November 21st, Washington D.C. on December 2nd and Chicago on December 3rd. "CA's philanthropic focus is to empower children to succeed," said Lisa Platania, CA's Director of Community Relations. "America SCORES is unique in that it offers an exceptional complement of fitness and literacy activities. We are proud to support America SCORES in its efforts to promote the well-being of children around the country."
