Re Merger of The Coastal Corporation with a subsidiary of El Paso Energy        
   Corporation

The merger of The Coastal Corporation ("Coastal") with a subsidiary of El Paso
Energy Corporation ("El Paso") was approved by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission
today and the Certificate of Merger has been filed with the Secretary of State
of Delaware.

As a result, Coastal has become a wholly-owned subsidiary of El Paso and the
Common Stock of Coastal will no longer be traded after today and will be
de-listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
