Sutcliffe Accepts Undertakings for the Completed Acquisition by Scottish Radio
Holdings plc and GWR Group plc of Galaxy Radio Wales and The West Ltd
Gerry Sutcliffe today announced that he has accepted undertakings from GWR Group
in relation to their completed acquisition of Galaxy Radio Wales and The West
Ltd with Scottish Radio Holdings. This decision is in accordance with the advice
of the Office of Fair Trading.
The undertakings state that GWR Group will divest its entire shareholding in
VRSL to Scottish Radio Holdings, and that they will also end Vibe 101's
co-location in GWR FM's offices as soon as reasonably practicable and in any
event no later than 1 February 2004.
The undertakings have already been signed.
Notes to Editors:
1. The Competition Commission report into the completed merger of Vibe Radio and
Galaxy Radio Wales Limited was published on 16 May 2003 (Cm 5811). The decision
to seek advice to obtain undertakings was announced the same day (see DTI News
Release 2003/299).
2. The completed merger comes within the scope of the share of supply test of
the FTA. The parties overlapped in the supply of radio advertising in the Severn
Estuary Licence Area. The parent companies, GWR and SRH, are groups with radio
interests across the UK, but the effects of this merger on competition are
likely to be confined to the local radio advertising market.
3. For non-media enquiries, texts of the undertakings are available from Trevor
Kenney, Consumer and Competition Policy Directorate, DTI (telephone 020 7215
5759, fax 020 7215 6565, e-mail Trevor.Kenney@dti.gsi.gov.uk). Media copies are
available from the DTI newsroom on 020 7215 2345.
